Description:
Students learn at their own pace by learning to read and
write sargam, a practical method for developing the physical
skills necessary for their instrument, and memorizing a progressive
series of teaching compositions composed by Ali Akbar Khan. As the
students progress from simple sargams through more and more demanding
compositions, they begin to acquire an understanding of the musical
templates necessary to move from fixed compositions to the art of
improvisation. On the way they learn about the theory of Indian music
and how it differs from that of the West. They will learn to recite and
clap the Bols of the various Tals used in their pieces. The theory of
Raga and what makes one Raga different from another will be explored.
They will also be encouraged to practice with one or more of the Tabla
students, and at the end of the semester they will have a Recital where
they can show off their accomplishments.
